Sustainability at Civil Service Live

Civil Service Live aims to serve as an exemplar of what a large-scale, environmentally conscious event should be.

Civil Service Live is delivered with sustainability embedded at every stage – from early planning and venue selection through to onsite delivery and post-event review. Our approach is designed to minimise environmental impact while maintaining the quality, accessibility and consistency expected of a national programme.

Sustainability is considered from the outset of each event. Venues are selected with a strong preference for public transport accessibility and recognised environmental credentials, helping to reduce travel-related emissions and support regional sustainability infrastructure. Programme design and delivery models are assessed early to identify opportunities for low-impact solutions, including hybrid and digital elements where appropriate.

Across all Civil Service Live events, we operate a digital-first approach to communications. Delegate information is provided via QR codes and online platforms, significantly reducing printed materials. Event production follows a reuse-first principle, with modular branding, staging, signage and lanyards used wherever possible. Waste minimisation and recycling protocols are applied consistently across venues, working closely with local teams to ensure compliance with site-specific sustainability systems.

Our operational teams are structured to support sustainable delivery. Remote working is embedded across project planning and coordination wherever physical presence is not essential, reducing unnecessary travel and operational emissions while supporting efficient, cost-effective delivery across multiple locations.

Sustainability performance is actively monitored. Following each event, some carbon and environmental metrics are reviewed and reported. These insights directly inform future planning, ensuring continuous improvement across the programme and transparent reporting against sustainability objectives.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

We recognise that some environmental impacts, particularly delegate travel, sit beyond direct operational control, and that sustainability infrastructure can vary across regional venues. These challenges are addressed through informed venue selection, consistent supplier standards and the use of hybrid delivery models where appropriate, ensuring a responsible and balanced approach across the national programme.

Civil Service Live is committed to reducing environmental impact and embedding sustainable practices across the full event lifecycle from programme design and venue selection through to onsite delivery and post-event performance review.
Sustainability is embedded at the earliest project stage through venue selection criteria and prioritises public transport accessibility and venues with environmental accreditations. Our sustainability planning checklists are applied at event design level, encompassing material selection, production methods, delegate communications and technical delivery models.

Our Commitment and Assurance

Civil Service Live is delivered by teams operating within an ISO-aligned sustainability management framework, with ISO 20121 certification targeted for completion in 2027. Core elements already in place include formal sustainability governance, designated sustainability leadership, delivery-stage sustainability checklists and ESG criteria embedded within supplier onboarding.

Key supply chain partners meet recognised sustainability standards, with accredited production partners able to provide detailed carbon footprint reporting for event delivery. This ensures that sustainability commitments are not only stated, but evidenced and measurable.
